RETURN TO MAIN LETTERS TO MORITZ PAGE

Dear Barry,

It’s just me, Sandy Taylor. I’m the teacher from Edgerton that got to
not only know Moritz but actually experience his gift. Here’s my story…

On Tuesday, March 27th, you visited Edgerton Elementary School. I’m the second grade teacher that was "late" in arriving for your author gathering. After your book reading and discussion, I took my students to P.E. I felt an urgency to return to the library where you had spoken to the second grade classes. I was in hopes of not being "late" again and wanted to purchase your books.

When I entered the library Moritz sat up from his relaxed position of lying at your side and headed towards me. You were doing a book signing with a youngster. There were few people in the library. I must say I was a bit startled with Moritz’s urgent rising and heading straight for me. He is jus a little big. Also, Moritz doesn’t walk, it’s as thought he prances.

Moritz stopped dead in front of me and looked me straight in the eyes. My fear immediately diminished. I put my hand up to pet his head and his head reached for my kind gesture. His head/nose then went to my right thigh, knee and finally my right foot. In the meantime I stood still and said, "Oh Moritz, you smell Fergi?" (Fergie is my dog) Moritz stayed pretty focused on my right foot for approximately one minute and then pranced off to his Master to once more recline into his relaxed position.

After Moritz left, it didn’t take long to realize something "different" had happened. I cannot explain the feeling. It’s simply a matter of knowing. I’ve felt weepy about this event all week. I sincerely don’t know why. What I do know is the following:

On June 14, 2007, I’m having yet another surgery on my right foot at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. After having 4 surgeries and 6 nerve blocks, this is my last attempt to save my right foot. I have to be in a wheelchair for 3-4 months following surgery with no weight on the leg, no creeping, crawling, anything. In other words, I’m simply to stay put.

There is another teacher that had witnessed this happening with Moritz. My back was to her and I didn’t realize she had seen the event take place. She, too, has found herself weepy. In fact, she didn’t tell me for a couple of days that she had witnessed what happened because she was feeling "weird" about it as well. My feeling was "glad" that someone else had seen so that I had someone to share the experience with. I hadn’t spoken to anyone about this.

At the time of your signing my book, I asked you what the most incredible experience has been since you’ve owned Moritz. You in return asked that I read the article (interview on your website) with Rappe-Flowers and I have. Amazingly enough, during my 3-4 months of sitting in a wheelchair I have plans to paint, draw, play my piano/flute, write, read and, "Leave illness at the door", because I’m ready to open another door and explore the inner beauty of myself.

Thank you so much for coming to our school and sharing Moritz with us. I’ll never quite understand what happened that day, all I can say is wow, I’m sure glad to meet both yourself and Moritz.

Most Sincerely,
Sandy Taylor
