An Open Heart
A Story About Moritz |
|

"This book can be summed up in one sentence.
Lord, let me be more like my Berner! Actually,
if I were more like MY Berner, the world would not
be a better place, trust me! So I guess the summary
would be more accurate as, Lord, let me be more like
Barry's boy Moritz! Combined with the beautiful
illustrations, this makes a lovely children's book!
If only we could all take it to heart!"
- Pat Long, bookaholic
and collector of
children's books
"This...story is a reminder that all children and
adults need in their libraries as a way to remember
that sharing kindnesses with one another can change
the world."
- Ann D. Looby, Trauma
Psychologist and President of Funding African
Children's

On
January 4, 2007 Hedvig Rappe-Flowers died.
In the spring of 2006, when I asked Hedvig to
illustrate a book about a Bernese Mountain Dog and
his manifestation of kindness. Hedvig said, “Yes.”
A few weeks later she told me the cancer had spread
to her lungs. I asked,
“Do you wish to do the book?”
“Yes,” she replied.
“I love painting.”
Midway through the summer when more illustrations
were needed,
she mentioned that she had never drawn a dog before.
“Can you capture Moritz?”
“Yes.”
Yes – so direct and such a fitting reflection of
Hedvig; Brief, positive, confident and enabling.
Through her artistic talent, personal integrity and
profound understanding her illustrations caught the
gentle kindness that touches us all. Her love of art
and beauty educated and inspired.
We will all miss her. |
